On Tuesday, July 14, 2008, Minnie Staten, 78, a longtime resident of Harlem, was critically injured when a Budget Rent-a-Truck backed up on the sidewalk and struck her. Budget Rent-A-Truck, which operates at 220 East 117th Street, uses the sidewalk to maneuver their truck to and from their garage. This has become a problem in the area. East 177th Street is a small and narrow road.
Minnie Staten, who was walking on the sidewalk with her walker, was hit when an employee of Budget was driving one of these trucks on the sidewalk. The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital where she was listed in critical condition with multiple internal injuries. Randy Staten said his mother was in no position to avoid the truck as she walks slowly and with a walker.
The family has hired an attorney to file a legal claim against Budget Rent-A-Car. This is an example of a company that completely ignores the safety of its neighbors said Neal Goldstein, attorney for the family. The idea that this company uses the sidewalk to move its trucks is just plain reckless. Mr. Goldstein plans to file suit immediately. The complete disregard of Mrs. Staten has put her in a position from which she may never completely recover.
