June 2009 - Job losses in the UK media industry have led to the creation of a jobsite specifically for people working in journalism and public relations.
The site, pressjobs.co.uk , works hand-in-hand with top recruitment agencies and employers to provide a free resource for those looking for work in the media.
Press jobs.co.uk is made up of former journalists and public relations professionals. Unlike other media related job sites pres jobs.co.uk is not owned by a multinational or conglomerate.
"Were a jobsite for the media made by people who actually work in the media," a spokesman said. "jobs.co.uk Press is dedicated to keeping the media industry moving by providing a free job service for our friends and colleagues. Weve had enormous support from recruitment consultancies across the board. It makes economic sense to advertise a job vacancy for free rather than paying the hefty charges levied by other recruitment sites. These media jobs sites seem to ignore the fact that costs are being cut almost everywhere you look."
Media businesses have been forced to restructure, ahead of what is expected to be a painful 2009. Redundancy programmes were unveiled at Trinity Mirror, which has cut 1,200 jobs and axed 44 titles, Channel 4, which will reduce its workforce by 200, and at Independent News & Media, where 90 jobs are being lost.
The Daily Mail and General Trust announced the cutting of 400 jobs last month. In the magazine world, Emap and Haymarket also undertook significant reductions in their headcounts. Pundits expect further cuts to take place at Telegraph Media Group and job losses are expected at the Financial Times. Some 500 posts are believed to be under threat at ITVs regional news operations, according to the National Union of Journalists. Although regional newspaper groups were encouraged by the BBC Trusts decision last month to reject the corporations plans for a local video-based online service, the BBC said the decision would cost the jobs of 200 journalists.
The spokesman said: "There is no denying the fact that the face of the media industry is changing across the United Kingdom. But there are still hundreds of jobs being created every week in public relations and journalism. Press jobs.co UK is all about providing a showcase for these vacancies.
