November 6, 2008, Par Pharmaceutical has gained an approval from Food and Drugs Administration to start shipping the generic version of Imitrix (sumatriptan). The product includes 4mg and 6mg starter kits and 4mg and 6mg pre-filled syringe cartridges of sumatriptan succinate injection. The 6mg vial is schedule to be launched this year 2009.
Glaxo, the distributor of branded imitrix has won over an extension of their patent until 2009 in US however in Europe their patent has already expired and Generic Imitrix is now available in European market. Last December 2008, Ranbaxy the distributor of Generic Imitrix has started its distribution of this product in US market.
Mylan Laboratories Inc., a US based company have achieved an approval from Food and Drug Administration to launched the generic Imitrix tablets in 25 mg,50mg and 100 mg doses. As of today, this drug is already available in the market.
Generic Imitrix (sumatriptan) is formulated to be used as a reliever of migraine. As a vasodilator, this drug works on reducing the activity of trigeminal nerve thus relieving migraine symptoms. Generic Imitrix is not only available in tablets and injection but also as a nasal spray. Treatment through injection was found out that has faster effect than the two. As per records, 96% of cases were relieved from their migraine after 15 minutes from the time they take the drug.
