Calton Hill, the Scottish experts in Digital Rights Management, have developed mobile phone and memory card software that allows people to watch the latest feature films on mobile phones. The new software enables film lovers to view first run movies whenever and wherever they choose.
Film studios are very protective about releasing the latest block-busters. Initially the films are available only in cinemas, being released on DVD only months or years later. The new Calton Hill SecureSharing technology allows films to be distributed on a memory card that can be played on portable devices including mobile phones, portable video players, set top boxes and PDAs. People can watch their films anywhere - at home, in the car, on a plane, in a hotel room. The SecureSharing software is the first of its type to be approved by mobile phone experts as protecting consumers and film studios from the problem of pirated illegal copies of films, top 10 music hits and sports.
Calton Hills SecureSharing technology satisfies the film studios by using military grade security standards to protect their content against hacking and copying, but also satisfies consumers by allowing them to view the films they have bought where ever and whenever they want - all they need is a device that accepts Secure Digital (SD) cards (now commonly the case with mobile phones, video players etc). And, for the first time ever, consumers can also legally lend or gift the SD card with their copy of the film to someone else, a feature previously prohibited by earlier Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies.
How have they done this? Firstly the film is stored on the card in encrypted form and cannot be decrypted without a set of keys. The keys are stored in a secure area of the card that can be read only by Calton Hills DRM Client software program. This program is also stored in a secure area of the card, but when the card is inserted into a mobile phone the program is loaded and run on the phone itself. For the first time ever the connection between the card and the mobile phone is encrypted and absolutely secure, protecting the keys, the film and the SD card from anyone trying to hack the phone. When the card is removed from the phone the film and the keys are deleted immediately, so the studios can be sure only one device can view the films at any time - the one in which the card is inserted.
Calton Hills SecureSharing complies with the mobile phone industrys GlobalPlatform STIP specifications, allowing it to run on any device that supports this standard. Basing the solution on GlobalPlatforms interoperable technology ensures that the solution is compatible with over 75% of devices within the mobile solutions market**, enabling mass market appeal and widespread adoption opportunities for content providers such as film studios, games developers and music production companies. It is this that makes Calton Hills product uniquely portable. The DRM Client also complies with the Open Mobile Alliance DRM v2.0 specifications, so it is not restricted to any proprietary technology.
