Technology PR:

Pontiac, MI May 15, 2008 -- DASI Solutions has donated SolidWorks to the Lawrence Tech Engineering Department for many years to enhance its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative in the community with SolidWorks matching the donations. These donations have allowed the teams to do extensive design validation including advanced computational fluid flow analysis, studies they weren't able to do in past contests.

This will be the 25th year for Lawrence Technological University's (LTU) participation in the Formula SAE competition series. For the past six years, the team has been using 3D CAD software, SolidWorks, to aid in the design and fabrication of their autocross racing car. The team, comprised of mechanical and electrical engineers, has been working for a year and a half to research and design a working competition car.

"Having access to SolidWorks makes a more collaborative working environment. Adding additional seats has made it a lot easier to interface with more people and speeds up the learning curve. Our collaboration has been seamlessly integrated while working with the initial design and concept in SolidWorks then transferring it into fabrication," says Shaun Bentley, a senior LTU Mechanical Engineering student and DASI Solutions Application Engineer.

David Darbyshire has been involved with Formula SAE since 1986 when he was a Mechanical Engineering student at Lawrence Technological University. As owner of DASI Solutions, Darbyshire stays connected with the next generation of Designing Engineers by providing the SolidWorks technologies used in the Formula SAE Competition.

About Formula SAE

The Formula SAE challenges about 120 student teams from colleges and universities throughout the world to conceive, design, fabricate, and race a small, formula-style, autocross racing car. For purposes of the competition, students are asked to assume that a manufacturing firm has engaged them to produce a prototype car for evaluation as a production vehicle. The intended sales market is the nonprofessional weekend autocross racer. The final product is then taken to the competition, where it is critiqued by experienced judges and compared to other cars entered.
