This release focuses on the most famous flamenco technique, the rasguedo. It takes a look at the 2 major types of rasguedos and thoroughly explains both of them. It also includes some tips for when each should be used.
"The rasguedos are the most important technique in my opinion, partly because it develops all your fingers and because of the main role it plays in any flamenco party. There are 2 main types of rasguedos, but dozens of variations in the technique that various flamenco guitarists employ as a form of personalization of their music" Hober states. He then proceeds to explain each of them and also say where they fit.
While good flamenco guitarists have an array of different rasguedos, all of them rely on the 2 main types. Whether instead of using 4 fingers they use only 3, or only 2 fingers for a fast trio style rasguedo, the all break down to the basics. While all of these are very hard to explain in words, with an effort of imagination one can visualise the motions and the sounds that a clean rasguedo produces.
This is where the flavors of each type of rasguedo become apparent. A 4-finger rasguedo might be too slow for a fandangos, so a 3-finger rasguedo while using the same technique idea is more suitable for a fast song. Alternating between different types in the same song is a good way to flourish a song to another level while raising the technical aspects of the song. Even the simplest of melodies can be played in a delightful way using complex and varied techniques.
A good tip to keep in mind about how it should sound is given by Hober: "If it sounds something like dram-dram-dram you are not doing it fast enough, just keep trying. It should sound something like a constant r, rrrr; when you get that kind of sound you are doing it correctly".
Broken down to its basics the rasguedo has 2 main types commonly used in flamenco music. For more detailed information visit the original article.
