The latest Volkswagen Golf GTI has won many accolades for its quality build, improved power, lower emissions and increased miles per gallon.

Although many of its features are similar to the previous Mk5 model, every aspect of the Mk6 is subtly better, according to Car Magazines Ben Barry.

Despite its increased power and acceleration, VW has still managed to reduce the GTIs CO2 emissions from 189g/km to 170g/km, and it can now do 38.7 miles per gallon, compared to 35 previously.

The fuel economy continues with the brand new electronically controlled torque distribution system, which adjusts the power to the front wheels during tight cornering to prevent power wastage if there is a loss of traction.

In his review, Ben Barry reveals that the Mk6 GTI "looks, feels and drives a lot like the Mk5" but is better in every department.

The improved driveability is largely thanks to the addition of a direct injection 2.0 litre turbo engine, which provides more power than previous VW models but offers a smoother and more refined ride, according to Mr Barry.

The keener engine allows the Mk6 to reach a top speed of 148 miles per hour and accelerate to 62 miles per hour from standing in just 7.2 seconds.

Ben Barry concludes that the new Golf GTI is "a little faster, more economical, nicer inside and boasts a better ride", when compared with the Mk5 GTI, and is more fun to drive.

Safety remains paramount in a hot hatch such as the Golf GTI Mk6 and the vehicle is fitted with a range of airbags including a drivers knee airbag, front seat side impact airbags and a curtain airbag system.

The Golf GTI is a great hot hatch for the 21st Century, offering all the power and fun of a sporty model whilst being better for the environment.

New models start at around 21,000 but a used VW can be found for much less.
