TAMPA, FLA. APRIL 16, 2009 Today, small- and medium-sized businesses (SMB) are being recognized for their generosity and commitment to helping each other succeed, even through the economic crisis. Highlighting the significant contributions small businesses make to the global economy, National Business Helping Business Day (http://snipurl.com/fmwdo)draws attention and praise to one of the most powerful business communities in the world.
On April 16, companies everywhere are encouraged to pay it forward by providing or offering a service or product for free to another business. BusinessHelpingBusiness.com has been established as a free online community, available 365 days of the year, that brings to the forefront the Needs and Haves of businesses around the world. In a show of solidarity, business owners are encouraged to tweet on Twitter and change their status on Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and other social networks to Pay it Forward National Business Helping Business Day" (http://snipurl.com/bhbhome).
SMBs are the cornerstone of U.S. prosperity and the economic crisis is hitting them hardest, said Stephanie Stewart, co-founder of BusinessHelpingBusiness.com. As business owners ourselves, we wanted to do something to bring the community together in cooperation, not competition, and from this grew National Business Helping Business Day. As we saw the outpour of support being offered year round, we realized there was something special going on and the SMB industry needed more recognition for the work it is doing to keep itself strong, even in these unstable times.
According to the National Federation of Independent Businesses, small businesses produce nearly half of the private GDP in the U.S. and create approximately two-thirds of all net new jobs every year. This makes the U.S. small business sector the worlds second largest economy, behind only the United States as a whole. In the U.S., the importance of SMBs is recognized by the highest levels of government, as made evident in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which allocates billions of dollars to support small and medium business recovery.
This day of recognition for the SMB community follows April 15, tax day in the U.S. and a particularly stressful time for business owners, said Steve McAbee, president, Wunderkind Public Relations, a partner in the initiative. SMBs everywhere are turning the drama into karma by supporting each other in our communities and around the world, not just today, but all year long. This tight community of entrepreneurs has the collective power to strengthen our economy during the most challenging of times.
How Small Business Collaboration Works
BusinessHelpingBusiness.com is an entirely grassroots movement intended to bring together large and small, global and local, and product and service businesses alike. Since its launch in December 2008, BusinessHelpingBusiness.com has connected small businesses worldwide through its free daily newsletter.
Once a business owner registers, he or she is able to post, at no charge, a Have or Need for the community. The Haves highlight the generosity of SMBs and the many ways a company can help another. For example, one business offered free interior design services to retailers and restaurants in the Portland, OR area, while another offered a no-cost race car sponsorship as a way to pay forward their good fortunes.
While many have services and products to offer, others are in need of help, from advice to products and services, which will enable them to compete in an increasingly difficult market. Recent posts in the Needs section include marketing advice, graphic design, as well as a venue to host a charitable event. The Haves and Needs are as varied as the businesses that are a part of the forum and are inspiring countless others to participate. To view more examples, visit the Needs and Haves sections of the BusinessHelpingBusiness.com website.
