Wasilla, AK September 17, 2008 -- The announcement of Governor Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate caused a surge in traffic to the City of Wasilla's newly launched website driving 700,000 hits to the site on the first day, according to Vision Internet, the company that created the site. The city's website, http://www.cityofwasilla.com (City of Wasilla), was launched on August 22, one week before the former mayor was introduced as the vice presidential candidate. The site had previously averaged 10,000 hits per day.

"We completed the 15 week development of the website and were confident it would serve the needs of the 7,000 residents of Wasilla," said Steve Chapin, President of Vision Internet, the company that created the website. "We design sites for growth, but I don't think anyone could have anticipated the circumstances that would drive so much traffic to the site." Vision Internet specializes in government websites and had never experienced such a surge in traffic.
"Our new website is a beautiful and functional portal to the City of Wasilla and sets a new standard for cities throughout Alaska," said IT Manager William A. Miller. "We were on a deadline to launch our new site, but could not have imagined the impact the nomination of former Mayor Sarah Palin would have on our website and our community." The website has been averaging more than 350,000 hits per day since the vice presidential announcement.
