The tournament seeks to revive interest in the sport with a camp for underprivileged children
Mumbai, February 18 2010: Today, Mr Vinod Muthukumar, Tournament Director, and Jayant Lapsia, President, Indian Gymkhana flagged off the 26th Ramu Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Cricket Club of India. The tournament is set to witness some of the greatest names of Indian basketball battle it out on the courts from the 21st of February to the 28th of February 2010.
The tournament is part of the continuous effort of the Indian Gymkhana to promote sports in India, and basketball being one of them. Says Mr. Jayant Lapsia, President , Indian Gymkhana, " The Ramu Memorial Basketball tournament has been pioneering some great work in the field of basketball. This year, we have brought together some of the greatest teams in Indian Basketball, and promise you an epic battle for the trophy on the court. The players are the creme de la creme of the basketball fraternity. Honoured to have United phospherous support the tournament, together we are geared to create history! " "
Players of national level recognition like Abbas, Kushi Ram, Hanuman Singh, Ajmer dazzled the audience during this era will come together once again this year on the court to create history. Understanding the potential of this sport, the title sponsor, United Phosphorous stated " Basketball has been the sport of glamour internationally, but has taken its time catching up in India. Settling into its own niche here, it is as popular in the circuit. But we feel the time ahs come to take it to the next level, and the Ramu Memorial Basketball Tournament is the way to do so."
This year, the tournament will see four teams in the womens category, and eight teams in the mens category compete for the trophy. All the players have played at the National level and the significant amount of them are Arjuna Awardees The Indian Gymkhana proposes to raise funds to promote the sport, not only internally, but also at the school level. They are looking to start a basketball camp for students, and will include underprivileged children in the programme.
On the changes that the tournament has seen over the years, Mr. Vinod Muthukumar, Tournament Director, RMBT says " This year we have devised a special statistics software to track individual player stats. This software is provided by the International basketball federation FIBA. We are also planning to promote the sport though a basketball camp for students, and will sponsor underprivileged children to learn basketball. The 26th year of the Ramu memorial Basketball tournament promises to deliver an experience like never before"
The Indian Gymkhana, organizers of the tournament propose the basketball camp for underprivileged children, and are looking for support to provide all the gear and equipment to them as well.
