The jaguar has always been a source of personal fascination in my career as a wildlife photographer ideally because it remains perpetually invisible and elusive despite being always around. My home is in a remote area of Belizes southern coast and the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is only a few miles away. This 150,000 acre National Park is also known as the Jaguar Preserve because it was created to be a sanctuary for jaguars. Living in this location affords us very regular sightings of the elusive jaguars albeit momentarily. This happens almost always when my cameras are not with me!

Perus Madre de Dios Amazon Basin was the subject of my exploration for four consecutive years during which my interests were largely about the jaguar. Despite making sojourns into the remote areas around the reserves and national parks of the region including Bahuaja-Sonene, Tambopata-Candamo and Manu my findings were well below expectations.

The quests breakthrough came last year when a tip was provided to me with regards to the best place for jaguar spotting. This location is the Encontras das Aguas National Park in Brazils Pantanal. The Pantanal is an expansive 58,000 square miles region of the country and is near the border with Bolivia. It is largely made up of numerous streams and rivers, grasslands that flood seasonally, and riverine forests. Several airstrips are located in this expanse. It is estimated that as many as 4000 to 7000 jaguars have the Pantanal as their habitat.

My decision to spend some weeks there during the months of August and September was very well rewarded. The experience was absolutely incredible and amazing for me. During my stay I encountered approximately 35 jaguars, 11 of which were unique. These jaguars were spotted as they engaged in a myriad of activities including hunting, mating, resting, relaxing, sleeping, and even while with their newborn cubs. Equally interesting were the locations in which the sightings were made including river banks, beaches, on trees, etc. All these made for incredible photograph shots the likes of which I didnt expect my entire life.
