Technology PR:

New York, NY September 18, 2008 -- International Biometric Group (IBG) announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice has extended IBG's grant to operate the Sensors, Surveillance and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence for an additional year and increased the total award value to over $5 million.

"The Center of Excellence provides a unique opportunity for state and local criminal justice practitioners to access world class expertise in biometrics and sensors technologies," stated Raj Nanavati, IBG Partner and Director of the Center or Excellence. "We very much look forward to continuing our work with the National Institute of Justice to support police departments, crime labs, court houses and correctional facilities across the country."

The Center's goal is to bring new technologies into practice within the criminal justice community. This is achieved by identifying the specific technology needs facing police departments, courts, correctional facilities and crime labs; supporting NIJ's R&D program; and conducting extensive field testing and lab evaluations.

The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) established the Sensors, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence to serve as a specialized technology resource for the 19,000+ state and local law enforcement and corrections agencies across the U.S. The Center of Excellence operates within the existing National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) system, a component of OJP's National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
