Rockledge, FL October 3, 2008 -- Chat with friends, win cool prizes and - reinforce math skills? That's the premise behind a Web site for students ages 11 to 16, flydigits.com. This site combines popular aspects of Web 2.x with Drupal 5.x undertones.

A shopping cart and dollar collection system - Google Charts API to plot members' user points (flyDollars) - is indeed innovative and has been packaged for use by other developers. This advanced site also includes messages boards, forums, contests and prizes. All the while, users will be honing their math skills, primarily unbeknownst to them.

Flydigits.com was born in the mind of Valencia Madison, a graduate student and San Diego native with a flair for numbers who dreamed of starting her own business. The goals she hopes to accomplish with the site are two-fold - to create a sustainable business and to give kids and teens an engaging and creative community that just might reinforce lifelong skills.

Madison hopes that kids will be attracted to the site for the fun and vibrant atmosphere and opportunities to showcase their creativity. These include activities such as designing their own "Fly Characters", chatting about school life, talking about shopping or working with friends to solve the problem of the week. They'll be so engaged that they won't even notice that they're learning at the same time. Said Madison, "Learning without knowing learning is taking place has and always will be the theme."

Though education is the number one focus, there is another benefit to the site. She hopes that the prizes, such as school supplies, will reach the children that need them most. Students earn these prizes by redeeming their Fly Dollars, which they get for entering contests, contributing to blogs, and just for logging in to their accounts. The math sneaks in again when they must calculate the "sales tax" on their prizes before cashing in.

The perfect candidate for the site is the teen who whines in algebra class, "When am I ever going to have to use this?" He will now have the answer to his question. "Flydigits.com gets kids in gear with the everyday workings of math and its relationship to the world we live in," Madison said.

The site can be accessed at www.flydigits.com. Registration is free. Content will be closely monitored and all topics will be generated by the moderator. Firewalls are used to keep members' information secure, and parents are encouraged to visit before their children register.
